Strengthening Systemic Structures

Bhumika has initiated a comprehensive adolescent empowerment across 102 villages in Maddur and Damaragidda Mandals of Narayanpet District, Telangana between 2015 to 2025. 

It focused on prevention of early and child marriages by empowering adolescents’ and sensitising families and rural communities. One of the key strategies is to collectivise adolescent boys and girls and build their capacities to evolve as peer leaders. Another key strategy is educate the family members and to work closely with the line departments and strengthen the capacities of the concerned to ensure an immediate support system to the adolescents for accessing their rights and making their choices.

Driving Sustainable Change: Adolescent Empowerment in Action

Bhumika’s adolescent empowerment project has made remarkable progress in advancing gender equality, preventing early and forced marriages, and strengthening local systems of support through:

  • Balala Dandu – Adolescent Collectives that promote peer learning and leadership
  • Yuva Kendrams – Life Skill and Learning Centres for adolescents
  • Chaitanya Bhumika Multi-Purpose Centre – A hub for education, safer space for protection, improving skills, sharing their concerns, mutual support and collective efforts towards and empowerment.

These interventions have taken root in 45 model villages, fostering a culture of awareness, accountability, and collective action. The dedicated efforts of staff, volunteers, adolescents, parents, youth leaders, and local stakeholders have created a ripple effect of change across communities. By focusing on education, life skills, protection, leadership, and rights, the initiative not only addresses immediate challenges but also builds a sustainable institution for community-led transformation—ensuring adolescents grow into confident, informed, and sensitized citizens.
